I find that conditioning and mixing clay is one of my most time-consuming tasks when I make polymer clay jewellery. This list is a starting point for hints and tips on mixing clay.

Your body heat will heat up the clay so you will spend less time conditioning it. (I wish I could remember where I read this. I would have liked to credit the person who posted this idea beacuse it is so obvious and clever but I have never thought of it until I read it.)
You forget which types of clay you used to get a certain colour and it can take several frustrating hours to figure out how you did it. It is preferable to take a photo as well.
