Covered cane

Covering a cane with millifiori slicesThis tutorial forms part of the complex cane or millifiori technique series. One of the common ways to use a complex cane is by adding slices from the millifiori cane onto another cane. This tutorial shows how to do it. 

Materials

Tools and equipment

  • Stiff blade
  • Flexible blade
  • Roller
  • Baking paper
  • Sharp object like a darning needle to make holes
  • Scalpel
  • Sheet of glass
  • Oven
  • Pasta machine
  • Buffer
  • Wet/dry sandpaper in the following grits 600, 800, 1000

Method

Make bull's eye cane, cut slices, cover, smooth cut beads

Pop your millifiori canes in the freezer.

Condition the red and white clay. Roll a log out of the white clay and a sheet out of the red. Make a bull’s eye cane. Cut slices from the cane. Image 1.

 

Place the slices around the bull’s eye cane. Image 2.

Roll the log between two glass sheets until the slices are smoothed into the cane.  Image 3.

Image 4 shows a side view of the cane. You can the slices from the complex cane looks when it’s been cut through.

Slice the log into even pieces, make holes and bake according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Buff or varnish as you see fit.
